Around the nation: HHS proposes rule to reverse Trump admin's Title X rule

Daily Briefing

HHS on Wednesday issued a proposed rule that would allow Title X funds to be distributed to family planning clinics that perform abortions or provide abortion referrals, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, Michigan, and New York.

    • District of Columbia: HHS on Wednesday issued a proposed rule for the Title X federal family planning program that would reverse changes made to the program under former President Donald Trump's administration. In March 2019, HHS under the Trump administration issued a final rule that bars entities that receive Title X family planning grants from providing or referring patients for abortion care. Under the proposed rule, HHS would largely return the Title X program back to the way it operated before 2019 and allow entities that perform abortions or provide abortion referrals to receive the program's family planning grants, Roll Call reports (Alonso-Zaldivar, Associated Press, 4/14; McCammon, NPR, 4/14; Raman, Roll Call, 4/14; Rovner, Kaiser Health News, 4/14).
    • Michigan: Beaumont Health has set up modular triage units and tents outside some of its hospitals to help handle Michigan's influx of Covid-19 patients. Nick Gilpin, Beaumont's medical director of infection prevention and epidemiology, said the surge of Covid-19 patients in the state is "like a runaway train," and the more than 800 Covid-19 patients at all eight of Beaumont's hospitals are "taxing our staff and our resources" (Shamus, Detroit Free Press, 4/15).
    • New York: Northwell Direct, Northwell Health's direct-to-employer health services company, has named Jillian Jweinat as VP and COO. In her role at Northwell, Jweniat will oversee work-related health initiatives, including occupational health programs as well as employer health benefits and behavioral health programs. Previously, Jweniat served as chief strategy and business planning officer in Aetna's local markets organization (Haefner, Becker's Payer Issues, 4/14).
