Around the nation: Biden hosts bipartisan meeting on cancer research

Daily Briefing

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday met with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to discuss potential investments to advance cancer research and treatment, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Colorado, the District of Columbia, and Massachusetts.

    • Colorado: HealthOne, part of HCA Healthcare, has opened a new hospital in Centennial, the first hospital built by HealthOne in 18 years. The new hospital, built at Centennial Medical Plaza, is a 20-bed boutique inpatient hospital with 16 medical/surgical beds and four critical care beds, as well as expanded services, including orthopedic and spine surgery, sports medicine, robotic surgery, general surgery, and women's services (Ellison, Becker's Hospital Review, 3/4; Werley, Denver Business Journal, 2/16).
    • District of Columbia: President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday met with a bipartisan group of federal lawmakers to discuss potential investments to advance cancer research and treatment. "We can make significant strides in fighting cancer and Alzheimer's and other diseases if we take a slightly different approach," said Biden, who oversaw the Cancer Moonshot initiative under former President Barack Obama's administration and launched the Biden Cancer Initiative in 2017. Biden added that he believes "we're on the cusp of some real breakthroughs across the board on cancer" (Samuels, The Hill, 3/3; Sink, Bloomberg, 3/3; White House release, 3/3).
    • Massachusetts: Mass General Brigham named Niyum Gandhi as CFO and treasurer, effective May 3. Gandhi currently serves as EVP, CFO, and chief population health officer at Mount Sinai Health System and previously served as a partner in the health and life sciences consulting practice of Oliver Wyman, a global consultancy (Gooch, Becker's Hospital Review, 3/4).
