Around the nation: Joe Biden secures the Democratic presidential nomination

Daily Briefing

Biden officially clinched the nomination on Friday after securing 2,004 delegates through states' primary elections, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia and Minnesota.

    • District of Columbia: Senators last week introduced a bill designed to protect the health information of patients who use Covid-19 exposure notification apps. The bill, called the Exposure Notification Privacy Act, requires user consent for their participation in the apps and allows users to request that their data be deleted at any time. The legislation also requires health officials to be involved in the systems and prohibits commercial use of the data (Jerich, Healthcare IT News, 6/5).
    • District of Columbia: Joe Biden on Friday secured enough delegates to secure the Democratic presidential nomination, meaning he will be the Democratic Party's official challenger to President Trump in November's presidential election. "It was an honor to compete alongside one of the most talented groups of candidates the Democratic party has ever fielded," Biden said in a statement issued Friday. Biden now has 2,004 delegates, with primary election results still pending in eight states and two U.S. territories (Ohemacher/Weissert, AP/Houston Chronicle, 6/6).
    • Minnesota: UnitedHealth Group (UHG) last week announced it is investing another $100 million into affordable housing, bringing the organization's total contribution to such efforts to $500 million. UHG allocated the funds to the Health & Housing Fund, which collaborates with Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future and the National Affordable Housing Trust. The investment will help to build more than 1,000 homes for people affected by housing insecurity.
