- California: Kaiser Permanente on Tuesday announced that it will begin constructing its new $900 million headquarters in Oakland in 2020. The new building, called the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Center, will include dedicated spaces for health education, a health clinic, community meeting spaces, weekly farmers markets, and exercise classes. Officials said the new headquarters will decrease operational costs by more than $60 million annually by reducing inefficient utility expenses and addressing facilities maintenance (Lagasse, Healthcare Finance, 6/18; Kaiser Permanente release, 6/18).
- Colorado: UC Health just named Soniya Fidler as president of Yampa Valley Medical Center. Fidler has served as interim president of the medical center since former president Frank May retired in 2018. Before being named president, Fidler also served as COO of the medical center for three years (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 6/18).
- North Carolina: Atrium Health CEO Gene Woods and Wake Forest Baptist Health CEO Julie Freischlag on Tuesday announced plans to establish a four-year medical school in Charlotte. The executives said the new school would allow the health systems to reach an underserved rural population in the state by encouraging in-state students to study at the campus. "We know if you're from here and you do residency [in North Carolina], you'll stay here and practice," Freischlag said, "And we need them in rural areas" (Huguley, Charlotte Business Journal, 6/18).
