The hospital-led generic drugmaker Civica Rx on Monday announced that it will deliver drugs to its over 800 member hospitals if they use wholesalers to purchase the products, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Maine, Texas, and Utah.
- Maine: The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a call for all state residents to get tested for sexually transmitted infections, as the state has seen a rise in reported gonorrhea and syphilis cases. According to the state's CDC, reported gonorrhea cases in the state have increased by 200% since 2014, while reported syphilis cases have increased by 600% (AP/Sacramento Bee, 4/30).
- Texas: The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston has named Timothy Harlin as EVP and CEO of its health system, effective Aug. 31. Harlin is currently serving as the chief operating and acceleration officer at Denver Health and Hospital Authority, and has previously served as COO of Hennepin Health System in Minnesota and CEO of Randolph Medical Center in Alabama (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 4/29).
- Utah: The hospital-led generic drugmaker Civica Rx on Monday announced that it will work with member hospitals that use wholesalers to purchase generic drug products. CEO Martin Van Trieste said the company, which plans to directly deliver its drugs to member hospitals, will make sure the member hospital knows the price it charges a wholesaler. "If a wholesaler takes a container that I sell for $1 and at the end of the system it comes out at $3 then the health system knows that they paid $2 for that convenience," VanTrieste said, adding, "We will force transparency." The company is expected to produce its first generic drug this year (King, Modern Healthcare, 4/29).
