Around the nation: Lee Health doctor donates kidney to coworker

Daily Briefing

Melanie Altizer, a doctor at Lee Health, is donating her kidney to her coworker Marianne McGiffin, a clinical manager at Lee, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Florida, New Mexico, and North Carolina.

    • Florida: Melanie Altizer, a doctor at Lee Health, is donating her kidney to her coworker Marianne McGiffin, a clinical manager at Lee. McGiffin has been battling kidney disease for 20 years, but her condition has worsened over the past few years. Altizer and McGiffin developed a bond working together at Lee. McGiffin said, "We have a bond that I think kidney or no kidney was going to be there" (Dickert, Fox4, 2/26).

    • New Mexico: Legislators in the New Mexico state House and Senate have proposed bills that would implement a "Medicaid buy-in" option. Several states are considering similar plans, which generally would allow individuals in those states to purchase publicly operated coverage that provides benefits similar to those offered by the state's Medicaid plan. The New Mexico plan also would provide financial assistance to lower-income individuals in order to reduce premiums (Andrews, "Shots," NPR, 2/25).

    • North Carolina: Novant Health has named Mark King as its VP of research and innovation, effective March 11. King currently serves as the assistant VP of research administration at Atrium Health and previously served as the assistant VP of the clinical trials office at Atrium's Levine Cancer Institute (Kim Cohen, Modern Healthcare, 2/25).
