Around the nation: Pfizer announces major reorganization

Daily Briefing

Pfizer on Wednesday announced the company will reorganize into three units, breaking out its consumer health care business into a separate unit, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Maryland, New York, and South Carolina.

    • Maryland: Ernest Grant has been named president of the American Nurses Association (ANA)—the first man ever elected to the position. Grant currently serves as the ANA's VP and is the head of the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Hospitals. Grant received a Nurse of the Year Award in 2002 from former President George W. Bush for treating victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack in New York City (Vaidya, Becker's Clinical Leadership & Infection Control, 7/11).

    • New York: Pfizer on Wednesday announced the company will reorganize into three units. The drugmaker is currently split into two units: Innovative Medicines and Essential Health. The reorganization will add Consumer Healthcare as a third unit (Mishra, Reuters, 7/11).

    • South Carolina: Deleah Pickler, a registered nurse at Trident Medical Center, found a missing three-year-old boy slumped over and overheated in a car and sprang into action to save his life. After Pickler discovered the boy, who had been playing hide and seek and got too overheated to escape the car, she placed him under a faucet and ran cold water over his face while another adult wrapped him in cold towels. According to Pickler, the child was making "clear progression" and was transported to a hospital (Dennis, The Gazette, 7/9).
