If completed, the merger between Jefferson Health and Einstein Healthcare Network could potentially establish the biggest residency program in the Philadelphia area, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Florida, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.
- Florida: Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital has received an anonymous $2.5 million donation to bolster services for infants who were exposed to opioids or other drugs while in utero. According to the hospital, the donation will fund the opening of a Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Follow-up Clinic and bolster care services provided at the Johns Hopkins All Children's NAS Specialty Clinic (McMorris, Tampa Bay Business Journal, 3/27).
- Pennsylvania: Jefferson Health and Einstein Healthcare Network this week signed a letter of intent to merge. The merger would create the biggest residency program in the Philadelphia area, Modern Healthcare reports, by combining Jefferson's $5 billion 14-hospital system with Einstein's academic medical center—the largest in the area—and 12 outpatient families. According to Modern Healthcare, the two organizations have collaborated for more than 20 years (Kacik, Modern Healthcare, 3/27; Brubaker, Philadelphia Inquirer, 3/27).
- Washington, D.C.: While the flu season has steadily been falling in Maryland and Virginia, Washington, D.C., saw an increase in reported flu cases last week. The flu season in D.C. peaked in late January, with 339 cases of flu reported in one week, and fell to a low of 73 cases per week in early March—but, last week, it rose again to 103 new cases (King, WTOP, 3/27).
