Covid-19 shouldn't disrupt your long-term strategy—except in these 3 key ways

    With infection numbers increasing across much of the northern hemisphere, having time to think about health care strategy can feel like a luxury.

    From conversations with member executives, we know that health care leaders want to harness the current moment to lock in changes that were improbable just a year ago. But with seemingly never-ending uncertainty, it can be difficult to know where to focus strategic efforts.

    The good news is that, despite the upheaval caused by Covid-19, the direction of health care strategy has not changed—and won't change much into the future.

    Put another way, Covid-19 has been broadly disruptive operationally to health care but narrowly disruptive strategically.

    We came to that insight after hundreds of interviews with health care executives over the past six months. Most still want to shift the balance of care away from the hospital, most still want better ways to work with patients with long-term conditions, and all of them want to use data to make better decisions.

    The 3 most notable shifts in health care strategy

    There are, however, a select number of areas in health care strategy where Covid-19 has significantly changed the calculus because the pandemic either elevated a topic's importance or offered us new opportunities. Below, I breakdown the three most notable shifts:

    1. Health equity is now a top agenda item for strategy. This is in large part due to the growing recognition that providers play a key role in both ensuring access for the most vulnerable communities as well as mobilizing the resources to elevate their outcomes.

    2. Collective decision-making feels more likely than ever. This is based on the extent to which the pandemic forced more cooperative and system-oriented planning and decision-making.

    3. Operational changes have expanded our ability to restructure our cost base. This shift has led to the desire to harness new care models, staff configurations, and access points to design a more affordable delivery model.

    While the above is not an exhaustive list, these are the three areas where we've seen a lot of movement. Our research experts have gathered innovative practices from across the globe to lock in progress in these areas.
