Recent studies suggest that hospitals led by physician CEOs perform better than hospitals led by non-physician executives. The authors of this article propose that physician executives have unique clinical expertise, which enables more effective goal setting and improves physician engagement. Physician leaders are also more likely to pilot innovative ideas in order to advance quality.
However, many physicians lack the team-based leadership and business management skills required to become effective executives. As a result, some health systems are investing in physician-specific leadership programs to cultivate a bench of physician leaders.
