FDA officials said the new center—called the Digital Health Center of Excellence—will provide FDA staff, manufacturers, and others with resources intended to accelerate the development of safe and effective digital technologies, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Florida, Georgia, Maryland, and Washington.

  • Florida: AdventHealth for $7.4 million purchased a church located in Tampa, Florida, that the health system plans to redevelop into a care pavilion with exam rooms and space for imaging services. An AdventHealth spokesperson said the health system currently is "working to understand how to best serve the health needs of the area and will be sharing those details soon" (Paavola, Becker's Hospital Review, 9/23; Gurbal Kritzer, Tampa Bay Business Journal, 9/22).

  • Georgia/Washington: Amazon has collaborated with Sharecare, a Georgia-based digital health company, to integrate over 80,000 questions and answers regarding health and wellness into Amazon's Alexa voice service. The new questions—which Sharecare developed in partnership with the Boston University School of Public Health and other health care providers and academic institutions—include, "When should I get screened for colon cancer?" and "Why are my feet cold?," among others (Dyrda, Becker's Health IT, 9/22)

  • Maryland: FDA on Tuesday launched a new center intended to help "modernize" the agency's digital health policies and regulatory approaches. FDA officials said the center—called the Digital Health Center of Excellence—will provide FDA staff, manufacturers, and others with resources aimed at accelerating the development of safe and effective digital technologies. FDA has tapped Bakul Patel, who had been serving as the director of the digital health division at FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, to serve as the new center's director (Cohen, Modern Healthcare, 9/22; FDA release, 9/22).
