Around the nation: Maine wedding connected to 147 coronavirus cases, 3 deaths

Daily Briefing

A wedding held at the Big Moose Inn Cabins and Campground in Millinocket, Maine—which violated an order issued by Gov. Janet Mills (D) that limits indoor gatherings to 50 people—had been linked to 147 cases of the novel coronavirus and three related deaths as of Friday, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Illinois, Maine, and Pennsylvania.

    • Illinois: Bradley University has ordered its entire student body to quarantine for two weeks in response to about 50 novel coronavirus cases the university has identified among people on its campus so far. The university is requiring students to limit nonessential interactions, stay within their apartments off campus or their residence halls, and begin taking classes remotely (Associated Press, 9/9).

    • Maine: A wedding held at the Big Moose Inn Cabins and Campground in Millinocket, Maine—which violated an order issued by Gov. Janet Mills (D) that limits indoor gatherings to 50 people—had been linked to 147 cases of the novel coronavirus and three related deaths as of Friday. Around 65 people attended the wedding reception on Aug. 7, according to Maine's CDC. The three people who died did not attend the wedding, but they contracted the coronavirus second-hand as a result of transmission from someone who had attended the event (Fieldstadt, NBC News, 9/4).

    • Pennsylvania: Universal Health Services (UHS) on Tuesday announced that its founder, chair, and CEO, Alan Miller, will step down as CEO. Miller will be succeeded by his son, Marc Miller, who currently serves as president of UHS and has led the company's business operations since 2009. Alan Miller will continue to serve as executive chair of UHS' board, as well as chair, president, and CEO of Universal Health Realty Income Trust (Gooch, Becker's Hospital Review, 9/8; Japsen, Forbes, 9/8; Hackett, Healthcare Finance News, 9/8).
