Around the nation: Pennsylvania health department terminates Hahnemann's license

Daily Briefing

Rachel Levine, the state's secretary of health, on Friday said she is "deeply concerned about the state and security of the building," in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Maryland, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania.

    • Maryland: Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis and his wife Jill have donated $3 million to the University of Maryland Children's Hospital. The donation will help build a lab and double procedure capacity at the hospital, according to the Baltimore Business Journal. The expansion was already in the hospital's plans, but the donation will allow the expansion to be completed within 18 to 24 months rather than five years, as was initially planned, the Journal reports. The new operating suite will be named the Evelyn Kay Davis Congenital Hybrid Catheterization Suite after Davis' daughter who was born with a heart defect (Milligan, Baltimore Business Journal, 11/4).

    • New Mexico: Lovelace Medical Center and the Heart Hospital of New Mexico have named Meghann Hutchison as CFO. Hutchison has been with Lovelace for six years and has been serving as the hospital's interim CFO since the recent departure of Reuben Murray, who left to become CEO of Christus St. Vincent (Davis, Albuquerque Business First, 11/4).

    • Pennsylvania: The Pennsylvania Department of Health last week announced that Hahnemann University Hospital's license has been terminated. Secretary of Health Rachel Levine on Friday in a letter to the judge overseeing the bankruptcy of the hospital said she is "deeply concerned about the state and security of the building and the supplies and equipment it is housing." The hospital discharged its last inpatient in July after it filed for bankruptcy in June (Brubaker, Philadelphia Inquirer, 11/4).
