When none of the boy's family members were found to be a match, Cami Loritz, a nurse at the transplant ICU at Froedtert Hospital, decided to donate a portion of her liver, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin.

  • Ohio: A 44-year-old man on Friday was charged with aggravated murder after he intentionally crashed a truck into the ED entrance of Diley Ridge Medical Center, killing two people, including one employee, according to the Fairfield County sheriff's office. The man, Raymond Leindecker, had undergone a psychological evaluation shortly before the incident (Viviano et al., Columbus Dispatch, 9/13).

  • Texas: The Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans' Assistance on Thursday awarded Baylor Scott & White Research Institute center $500,000 to help expand mental telehealth treatment. The statewide program, which builds off of a telehealth pilot program called Vet PaTHS, will support virtual visits through live video conferencing on computers or mobile devices. The program will be offered to veterans and their family members at no cost (Drees, Becker's Hospital Review, 9/13; Shadrock, KWXT, 9/12).

  • Wisconsin: When eight-year-old Brayden Auten came home from school with a stomachache, diarrhea, and a yellow tint in his eyes, his parents took him to a primary care clinic. Clinicians at Children's Hospital in Milwaukee soon found that a mysterious virus was attacking Brayden's liver and that he would need a liver transplant. When none of his family members were found to be a match, Cami Loritz, a 25-year-old nurse at the transplant ICU at Froedtert Hospital, decided to donate a portion of her liver. The transplant was successful, and Brayden and Loritz are expected to make a full recovery, according to CNN (Kim, CNN, 9/14).
