Around the nation: Ascension taps current president, COO as interim CEO

Bite-sized hospital and health industry news

Joseph Impicciche, Ascension's current president and COO, will serve as the organization's interim president and CEO, effective July 1, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Illinois, Maryland, and Missouri.

  • Illinois: The American Medical Association on Tuesday swore in Patrice Harris as its 174th president, making Harris the first black woman to serve in the position. Harris said she hopes "to be tangible evidence for … young boys and girls from communities of color that you can aspire to be a physician." As president, Harris will continue to serve as chair of the AMA Opioid Task Force which she has led since 2014. She will also continue her private practice (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 6/11).

  • Maryland: The number of people who died of heroin and fentanyl overdoses in Maryland in the first quarter of 2019 decreased by 14% compared with the first quarter of 2018, according to preliminary data. But while the data show 85 fewer deaths in 2019 so far, Maryland public health officials noted that the total number of opioid-related deaths in the state is still high, with more than 500 such deaths in the first three months of 2019. "The heroin and opioid crisis in Maryland is by no means over," Steven Schuh, executive director of the Operational Command Center, said. "We remain in the midst of a public health crisis of unprecedented magnitude" (Cox, Washington Post, 6/11).

  • Missouri: Ascension on Tuesday announced that Joseph Impicciche, Ascension's current president and COO, will serve as the organization's interim president and CEO, effective July 1. The announcement comes three months after CEO Anthony Tersigni announced his plan to retire. The system also established a new investment fund and unveiled the new leadership team that will shape the health system (Porter, HealthLeaders Media, 6/11).
