After Morgan Davis, a medical student at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, learned where she'd be spending her residency, she was handed another envelope, this one from her boyfriend, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Florida, Maryland, and Mississippi.
- Florida: Karen Kerr has been named president of Bartow Regional Medical Center. Kerr currently serves as president of South Florida Baptist Hospital and will continue working in a dual role as president of both hospitals. At Bartow Regional, Kerr succeeds Philip Minden, who left to become president of St. Joseph's Hospital-South (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 4/1).
- Maryland: Western Maryland Health System (WMHS) has signed a letter of intent to join University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). WMHS and UPMC have been engaged in a clinical affiliation since February 2018 that allowed UPMC's behavioral health, oncology, and cardiovascular and neurological surgery specialists to practice at WMHS' acute-care hospital. Terms of the deal were not disclosed (Bannow, Modern Healthcare, 4/1).
- Mississippi: During a Match Day Ceremony last month, one of the University of Mississippi Medical Center's graduating medical students received her residency match—and a marriage proposal. When Morgan Davis was onstage accepting the envelope that told her where she'd spend her residency, her boyfriend, Maurice Mills, handed her a second envelope containing his marriage proposal. Mills said, "I figured what a better way to celebrate all the work she had done than a proposal?" He added, "I did feel really bad for the person right behind us" (Krueger, New York Times, 3/30).
