Around the nation: IU Health uses an escape room to train new nurses

    Morgen Nolan, a first-year nurse at the system, said the training was "just like it would be in a regular hospital with a real patient," in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Indiana, Utah, and Wisconsin.

    • Indiana: First-year nurses at IU Health last week participated in a medical escape room, which is part of the system's quality and safety training for new hires. For the training, the nurses had an hour to gather clues about an ailing dummy patient in order to unlock the door. Danielle Ely, a Clinical Nurse Educator who helped establish the training, said the nurses "seem to really enjoy being out of the classroom." Morgen Nolan, a first-year nurse for the system, said the training was "just like it would be in a regular hospital with a real patient" (Kast, Fox 59, 3/4).

    • Utah: Intermountain Healthcare just announced that it decreased the number of opioids prescribed to patients by 3.8 million in 2018, which represents a 30% reduction. However, the reduction is short of the system's 40% reduction goal for 2018, which it announced in 2017. Intermountain executives said they are looking to reduce opioid prescriptions by an additional 5% in 2019 (Commins, HealthLeaders Media, 3/7).

    • Wisconsin: Beaver Dam Community Hospital and Marshfield Clinic Health System just signed a "definitive agreement" to affiliate. Under the agreement, the Marshfield system would acquire Beaver Dam Community Hospital. Susan Turney, CEO of the Marshfield system, said the merger would provide the Beaver Dam community with "greater access to more local health care services." The deal is expected to close later this year (Daily Citizen, 3/5).
