Around the Nation: Apple just hired a Fairview executive to run its health clinics

    • California: Beginning Oct. 2, physicians in the state will be required to review the California patient prescription history database before prescribing medication. The Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES) has existed for decades, but prescribing physicians were never required to consult the system. The database provides a list of the patient's prescriptions, the pharmacies that filled the prescriptions, and the physician who originally prescribed the medication. State Sen. Ricardo Lara (D), who drafted the legislation that requires doctors to use the database, said, "This tool will help limit doctor shopping, break the cycle of addiction and prevent prescriptions from ever again fueling an epidemic that claims thousands of lives" (Davis, Los Angeles Times, 9/16).

    • California/Minnesota: Apple has tapped M. Osman Akhtar, COO of Fairview Health Services, as the lead of the company's employee health clinics. The medical clinics, called AC Wellness, will serve employees at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California. Apple has hired more than 40 doctors, nurses, and care navigators to AC Wellness in the past three months (Farr, CNBC, 9/13).

    • Nevada: Hailey Dawson, age 8, has thrown the first pitch at all 30 MLB stadiums—with a 3D-printed hand. Hailey was born with Poland syndrome, a genetic condition that can cause abnormalities in the fingers and hands, and received her first 3D-printed hand from the engineering department at University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Hailey threw her first Major League pitch at a Baltimore Orioles game in 2015, and threw her final pitch at Angel Stadium in California last month (Ferdman, Mashable, 9/17).
