Daily Briefing

The Iowa Supreme Court on Friday blocked a 2017 law that mandated a 72-hour waiting period for all women seeking an abortion in the state, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Iowa, Louisiana, and South Dakota.

    • Iowa: The Iowa Supreme Court on Friday blocked a 2017 law that mandated a 72-hour waiting period for women seeking an abortion in the state. Justice Mark Cady wrote in the ruling that the law violated "both the due process and equal protection clauses of the Iowa Constitution because its restrictions on women are not narrowly tailored to serve a compelling interest of the state" (Wise, The Hill, 6/29; Goldberg, Reuters, 6/29).

    • Louisiana: Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center will purchase Women's and Children's Hospital from HCA Healthcare. The purchase also includes the Elaine M. Junca Woman's Imaging Centre, Lafayette Surgicare, the Cancer & Infusion Center, the Kid's Specialty Center, and a number of physician practices and clinics. The purchase will take place over the next 90 to 120 days (Daily Advertiser, 6/28).

    • South Dakota: Prairie Lakes Healthcare has named Kenneth DeBoer as president and CEO, effective Aug. 20. DeBoer is currently serving as the president and CEO of Jamestown Regional Medical Center in New Jersey. He is succeeding Jill Fuller, who is retiring (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 7/2).
