Around the nation: Patrice Harris becomes first African-American female president of AMA

Bite-sized hospital and health industry news

Patrice Harris is a psychiatrist from Atlanta, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, and Texas.

  • Florida/Texas: A Texas nurse took in and cared for a Florida couple's dog as the patients recovered from a car accident in East Texas. Nurse Angela Bowers, director of the University of Texas Health Tyler's ED, would bring the dog by the couple's room to visit during their recovery, and cared for the dog after they were transferred to a rehabilitation facility in their home state.  She recently drove to Florida to reunite the patients with their dog. "I wanted to make sure that they knew we would take care of their precious little dog so they wouldn't have to worry," Bowers said in a news release (Hartley, Tyler Morning Telegraph, 6/12).

  • Georgia/Illinois: Patrice Harris, a psychiatrist from Atlanta, was elected president of the American Medical Association on Tuesday, making her the first African-American woman to hold the position. Harris is currently working in private practice with both public and private organizations on health service delivery and is an adjunct assistant professor in the Emory Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Mandel, Atlanta Business Chronicle, 6/12; Ross Johnson, Modern Healthcare, 6/12).

  • New York: University of Rochester Medicine's St. James Hospital has named Bryan O'Donovan as president and CEO. O'Donovan most recently served as director of ambulatory administration and practice management at Strong Memorial Hospital—also part of University of Rochester Medicine (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 6/11).
