    Joe Willis, a graduate student at Indiana University Northwest, received his MBA diploma from his hospital bed at University of Chicago Hospital where he was recovering from a heart transplant, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Alabama, Illinois, and Texas.

    • Alabama: Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital has named Douglas Brewer as CEO. Brewer is currently CEO of Citizens Baptist Medical Center in Talladega and previously worked at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham and Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center. Brewer will succeed Arthur Evans, who is retiring at the end of June (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 5/10).

    • Illinois: Joe Willis, an MBA graduate student at Indiana University Northwest, received his diploma from his hospital bed at University of Chicago Hospital, where he was recovering from a heart transplant. Willis, who initially wanted to work in medicine before learning his condition would prevent him from treating patients, said that he "had some doubts" and "thought it would be too hard" to graduate, but "stayed positive" to earn his degree (CBS Chicago, 5/10).

    • Texas: Texas Health Resources on Wednesday announced a $300 million expansion project for Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth. The expansion will include a nine-story tower with 144 patient beds and 15 surgical suites. Construction is expected to be finished by late 2021 (Dallas Business Journal, 5/10).
