HHS Secretary Alex Azar, who stayed at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indiana for one day under observation, returned to work on Tuesday, according to a statement from HHS, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from California, Indiana, and Texas.
- California: UC San Francisco has named Aleksandar Rajkovic as the first-ever chief genomics officer of UCSF Health, effective May 1. Rajkovic previously served as Marcus Allen Hogge Chair in Reproductive Sciences and the director of reproductive genetics at Magee-Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 4/13).
- Indiana: HHS Secretary Alex Azar on Monday was discharged from St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis after receiving treatment for a "minor infection," according to statements from HHS. HHS in a Monday statement said Azar, who "was treated with intravenous antibiotics," remained in the hospital overnight for observation "out of an abundance of caution." According to HHS's update on Monday, Azar remained "fully functional during his brief period of observation and has been in regular contact with HHS senior leadership." He returned to work on Tuesday (Frieden, MedPage Today, 4/16).
- Texas: Mario Reyes, an award-winning corporate chef, cooked a gourmet lunch for over 100 doctors and nurses at Methodist Dallas Medical Center to say thank you for performing the liver transplant that saved his life. The meal included gourmet pizza and salad, as well as a table full of desserts (WFAA, 4/16).
