Around the nation: Ohio becomes first state to ask for individual mandate waiver

Daily Briefing

Ohio officials have submitted a request to HHS to waive the Affordable Care Act's individual mandate, making Ohio the first state to submit such a waiver, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from New York, North Carolina, and Ohio.

    • New York: University of Vermont Health Network has named Michelle LeBeau as president of Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, as well as president and COO of Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH) in Plattsburgh. LeBeau has previously served as VP of human resources at CVPH. She succeeds Stephens Mundy, who is retiring as president at Alice Hyde Medical and CVPH (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 4/3).

    • North Carolina: Wake Forest Baptist Health-Lexington Medical Center announced plans to replace its current ORs with a new, $31.5 million surgery center. The 26,500 square-foot center will feature four digital ORs, a 10-bay post-anesthesia care unit, and a cystoscopy procedure room, in addition to a waiting area and consultation rooms (Seaman, Triad Business Journal, 4/3).

    • Ohio: Ohio officials have submitted a request to HHS to waive the Affordable Care Act's individual mandate, making Ohio the first state to submit such a waiver. While Congress eliminated the mandate's financial penalty in its tax bill in December 2017, Jillian Fromen, the director of Ohio's department of insurance, noted that the legislation "did not eliminate the mandate itself" (Dickson, Modern Healthcare, 4/3).
