Around the nation: Northwestern Memorial completes 6-way organ transplant

Daily Briefing

Six living donors gave a kidney to six recipients, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Illinois, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania.

    • Illinois: Doctors at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago have performed a six-way living donor organ transplant. The 12 participants in the kidney donation "swapportunity" included three sets of friends, a niece and her aunt, second cousins, and a good Samaritan whose efforts started the process, Cheryl Gendron reports for ABC News. Joseph Leventhal, director of kidney transplantation at the hospital, said the experience was "extremely rewarding" and added that "it was a relief that were able to get it off successfully" (Gendron, ABC News, 2/28).

    • Nebraska: The Nebraska Senate on Wednesday voted 33-0 to give first-round approval to a bill that would make assaulting health care providers with bodily fluids a stand-alone crime. The bill would put health care professionals in the protected class that currently includes firefighters and police officers, according to state Sen. Mike McDonnell (D). Opponents say the bill classifies state residents differently and could open a pathway to certain groups receiving special protections (AP/Sacramento Bee, 2/28).

    • Pennsylvania: Geisinger Health announced Wednesday that Kevin Roberts will be its new EVP and CFO. Roberts, who currently serves as SVP and CFO of St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare, will join Geisinger in April. Outgoing Geisinger EVP and CFO Kevin Brennan at the end of 2017 announced plans to retire. Brennan will stay with Geisinger through June (Kacik, Modern Healthcare, 2/28).
