Around the nation: Cleveland Clinic ED physician to run for governor of Ohio

Daily Briefing

Jon Heavey, an ED physician at Cleveland Clinic, has announced that he will run for the Democratic nomination for governor of Ohio, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Florida, Ohio, and Virginia.

    • Florida: Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point has named Sharon Hayes as CEO. Hayes previously served as CEO of Edward White Hospital and COO of Chippenham Medical Center in Virginia. Hayes takes over the position from Shayne George, who left the hospital for an executive position in another state (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 2/8).

    • Ohio: Jon Heavey, an ED physician at Cleveland Clinic, has announced that he will run for the Democratic nomination for governor of Ohio. Heavey is running with Adam Hudak, a paramedic and firefighter. If successful in his bid, which is the first time Heavey has run for office, Heavey said he plans on addressing the opioid misuse epidemic and improving health care services with policies that are "rooted at the bedside and in the community" (Knowles, Becker's Hospital Review, 2/8).

    • Virginia: Two teams of health care specialists, totaling 12 experts overall, are headed from Virginia to the U.S. Virgin Islands to help with hurricane-recovery efforts. The health workers will collaborate with local officials to inspect area restaurants and provide education on sanitation (AP/Sacramento Bee, 2/9).
