The top 250 hospitals for clinical outcomes, according to Healthgrades

Daily Briefing

Healthgrades this week honored 250 hospitals with its "2018 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence," recognizing facilities that performed in the top 5% nationwide based on risk-adjusted clinical outcomes for more than 20 common procedures and conditions.

Healthgrades based the award on inpatient data for mortality and complications pulled from CMS' Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) database, as well as inpatient data on appendectomy and bariatric surgery reported by the 17 states that provide all-payer state data. Healthgrades pulled MedPAR data for 2014 through 2016 and focused on available state data from 2013 to 2015.

Healthgrades adjusted the data for patient demographics and clinical risk factors. It then gave the Distinguished Hospital Award to hospitals that were "rated in the top 5% in the nation with the lowest risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates across at least 21 of 32 common conditions and procedures," according to Healthgrades.

Award-winning hospitals have lower mortality risk for 19 procedures, conditions

Patients at hospitals awarded the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence had a 26.3% lower risk of dying compared with patients treated at non-recognized hospitals for the 19 measures for which mortality was the primary clinical outcome. Overall, according to a press release from Healthgrades, if all hospitals as a group had performed comparably to the award-winning hospitals, on average, 159,924 lives could have been saved from 2014 through 2016.

Brad Bowman, CMO of Healthgrades, said, "Consumers should prioritize hospitals and health systems that achieve high marks in clinical quality. … We commend these organizations for their commitment to driving better patient outcomes and high quality care" (Healthgrades award recipients list; Healthgrades release, 1/23; Healthgrades quality methodology, accessed 1/25).
