Around the nation: Emory to receive $400M donation for medical research, patient care models

Daily Briefing

The donation is the largest in the school's history, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Georgia, Iowa, and West Virginia.

    • Georgia: The Robert W. Woodruff Foundation will donate $400 million to Emory University to use for medical research and developing improved patient care models, Emory announced Monday. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the donation is the largest the university has ever received. Jonathan Lewin, Emory's EVP for health affairs and CEO of Emory Healthcare, said, "This gift will allow us to accelerate the scientific discoveries needed for breakthroughs in patient care and to extend our reach in reducing the burden of disease for patients and their families" (Stirgus, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 1/8).

    • Iowa: Nearly one in five Iowa residents has personally experienced or knows someone who has experienced a medical error, according to a survey from Heartland Health Research Institute. Most medical errors—59%—occurred in a hospital. The next-most common setting was in clinics, cited by 29% of respondents. According to the survey, 60% of respondents said they were not informed of the mistake by medical staff (Rappleye, Becker's Clinical Leadership & Infection Control, 1/8).

    • West Virginia: Christopher Howe has been named CEO of Plateau Medical Center, effective Jan. 4. Howe most recently served as assistant CEO at Regional Hospital of Scranton, in Pennsylvania (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 1/8).
