Maggie McNeill, a nurse at Ashe County Memorial Hospital in North Carolina, scaled a cliff in the middle of a storm to get to work and deliver two babies, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Maine, New York, and North Carolina.
- Maine: The Albert Lepage Foundation has donated $10 million to St. Mary's Health System, the largest single donation in the health system's history. The foundation specified that the donation, which will be allocated in annual donations of $250,000, has to be spent on people as opposed to buildings or infrastructure. The health system will use the money to establish the Albert Lepage Center for Patient Experience which will focus on improving the interaction between patients and families and St. Mary's (Paavola, Becker's Hospital CFO Report, 10/24).
- New York: Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus has selected Sam Marrazzo as its first chief innovation officer (CIO). Marrazzo previously served as the CIO of Superior Talent Resources, an employment agency, and as director of technology solutions at Praxair, an industrial gases company (Kim Cohen, Becker's Hospital Review, 10/24).
- North Carolina: Maggie McNeill, a nurse at Ashe County Memorial Hospital in North Carolina, scaled a cliff in the middle of a storm to get to work and deliver two babies after a storm had washed out the only road into town. Her husband recorded a now-viral video of the effort. "It is the nature of nursing," McNeill said. "There's not a time that you get a free card out and I don't think any of us really want it" (Levins, WCNC, 10/24; Price, News & Observer, 10/24).
