Around the nation: Country music singer Jason Aldean visits Las Vegas shooting victims in hospital

Daily Briefing

The county music singer, who was onstage when the shooting started, visited patients recovering from the Las Vegas mass shooting at University Medical Center, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Nevada, Utah, and Virginia.

    • Nevada: Country music singer Jason Aldean visited Las Vegas shooting victims at University Medical Center on Sunday. Aldean was on stage when Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old man from Nevada, opened fire Oct. 1 on people attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival, a three-day country music concert, killing at least 59 people and injuring more than 500 others (Brown, Las Vegas Review-Journal, 10/8).

    • Utah: Intermountain Healthcare has pledged $2 million to support community efforts to combat the opioid misuse epidemic in Utah in 2018. The funding comes on top of the health system's pledge of $3 million to help combat the epidemic from 2015 to 2017. Part of the funds for 2018 will go toward supporting provider education that teaches best prescribing practices (Lagasse, Healthcare Finance News, 10/6).

    • Virginia: The American Medical Group Association has named Jerry Penso as its new president and CEO. Penso is currently serving as the organization's chief medical and quality officer. He will be succeeding Donald Fisher, who passed away in March (Shute, HealthLeaders Media, 10/6).
