Around the nation: Northwell, Hofstra rename medical school to honor couple who donated millions

Daily Briefing
    • Kansas: Ruth Duling has been named the next CEO of Girard Kansas Medical Center. She took over the position Sept. 1, after serving as the hospital's director of patient financial services (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 8/25).

    • New York: Northwell Health and Hofstra University have renamed their medical school in honor of Donald and Barbara Zucker, who have donated $61 million to the facility in recent years. The school is now called the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. The couple's donations include $50 million for scholarships to medical students, $10 million to create the Barbara Hrbek Zucker Emerging Scientists Program for training postdoctoral fellows, and $1 million in scholarships for nursing school and physician assistant students (Paavola, Becker's Hospital Review, 8/31).

    • Oregon: After processing a backlog of eligibility checks, Oregon has dropped Medicaid coverage for more than 55,000 individuals. The individuals who lost coverage either no longer qualified for the program or did not respond to an eligibility check. The backlog, which encompassed 115,000 Medicaid beneficiaries, resulted from technology issues and a boost in Medicaid enrollment under the Affordable Care Act, according to the Associated Press (AP/Sacramento Bee, 9/1).
