Around the nation: New York bans e-cigarettes at schools

Daily Briefing
    • California: Providence St. Joseph Health has tapped Venkat Bhamidipati to serve as EVP and CFO of the organization, which was established by a merger between Providence Health & Services in Renton, Wasington, and St. Joseph Health in Irvine, California, Bhamidipati succeeds Jo Ann Escasa-Haigh, who was serving as interim CFO and who will now become CFO of operations. Bhamidipati previously served as managing director for business development and growth strategy at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington (Gooch, Becker's Hospital Review, 7/25).

    • Illinois: Norwegian American Hospital in 2008 launched a program called Care-A-Van, which uses a mobile medical clinic to provide preventive care services to low-income children at public schools in Chicago's West Side. The program provides services such as immunizations, physicals, and screenings for lead, hemoglobin, hearing, vision, and—in a separate van—dental care. Care-A-Van serves more than 3,000 children each year at 80 schools and doubled its number of patients between FY 2013 and FY 2015 (Karash, Hospitals & Health Networks, 7/26).

    • New York: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed a law on Tuesday, effective immediately, that bans the use of e-cigarettes in public and private schools throughout the state, including in school buildings, on school grounds, and on school buses. Cuomo says that he believes the ban will help overarching efforts to fight teenage smoking (AP/Sacramento Bee, 7/25).
