Around the nation: CDC allocates $240K to Vermont to fight opioid misuse

Daily Briefing
    • Michigan: Children's Hospital of Michigan has named Monique Butler as COO. Butler, an internist who also holds an MBA, previously worked as VP of medical affairs and CMO at Sinai-Grace Hospital as CMO and Detroit Receiving Hospital (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 7/18).

    • South Dakota: To improve how criminal defendants with mental health issues interact with the criminal justice system, South Dakota officials are starting a fund to shorten wait-times for mental health screenings for criminal defendants. Currently, the state is struggling to meet demand for mental competency screenings, the Associated Press reports. Under the new fund, the state's Department of Social Services is reallocating money originally given to the South Dakota Human Services Center for court-ordered forensic evaluation to the Association of County Commissioners to give to counties who apply for the funding (AP/Sacramento Bee, 7/18).

    • Vermont: CDC has allocated nearly $240,000 to the state as part of $12 million in grants the agency is allocating to 23 states and the District of Columbia to combat the opioid misuse epidemic. According to the Associated Press, funding recipients will use the money to monitor opioid overdoses and bolster prevention efforts (AP/Sacramento Bee, 7/18).

However, many of these initiatives are aimed at treating existing opioid misuse and abuse, rather than preventing them in the first place.

This webconference outlines tactics to engage providers, patients, and community members in collaborative efforts to adequately address misuse and abuse.
