  • As a part of Phase II of a multi-phased hospital improvement plan, the 16-bed CVICU suite is located in CHI Memorial Hospital's new South Tower in Chattanooga, Tenn. and is designed to streamline patient flow with placement for easy accessibility to surgery.   • In response to growing demand as a Level Two Trauma Center, IKM Incorporated converted an underutilized area on Monroeville, Pa.-based Forbes Hospital's 6th floor to a 20-bed ICU. The designated  “heart of the trauma center” is divided into four neighborhoods, each with their own central nurse station and 10 satellite nurses stations to achieve a 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio.   • Recent recipient of the Beacon Award for Excellence in Critical Care, Danbury Hospital's Buck Pavilion, designed by The S/L/A/M Collaborative, features a new 30-bed ICU/CCU.   • Array Architects designed the 17-bed Neonatal Cardiac ICU located at New York Presbyterian's Columbia University Medical Center.   • Addressing a growing demand in the Oxnard, Calif. area, architects from Devenney Group designed the new 20-bed, private room NICU at Dignity Health St. John's Regional Medical Center. The NICU is designed to support the healing process by providing ample natural light and reducing noise to foster recovery while providing privacy for patients and families in a safe, secure environment.   • Davis Partnership Architects designed this four-story, 94-bed patient tower addition to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Wash. on top of their existing six-story patient tower. Two of the new floors provide 20 ICU beds each, with extensive detail to family spaces including multiple lighting controls for patient/family/staff needs. (© 2016 Rick Keating)

  • SmithGroupJJR  designed this 30-bed ICU in a curvilinear layout to provide maximum visibility of critical patients. Part of a 232,000 SF, 7-story bed tower addition to Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Md., the ICU provides a mix of natural and indirect lighting and family gathering and respite spaces add to the healing environment.  (©2015 Maxwell MacKenzie)

  • ZGF utilized evidence-based design principles for the Legacy Emanuel Adult Services ICU remodel to promote calming, family-centered care for patients receiving intensive neurological, trauma, and orthopedic care.   • TMPartners designed the critical care renovations at Colquitt Regional Medical Center in Moultrie, Ga., to provide modern care giver and support spaces, enhancing the experiences of patients and providers alike.  Operationally, the new Surgery, PACU, Same Day, and ICU were located adjacent to each department and connected by an elevator, moving provider-only space out of public view.   • AECOM designed the critical care unit at Mercyhealth – Riverside in Rockford, Ill. to flex with an adjacent Med/Surg unit to accommodate fluctuating seasonal census, create a transitional step-down care unit, manage staff demands with flexible workspace, and support families with comfortable spaces.   • Architects from Guidon Design and Baskervill designed the expanded and renovated MICU/SICU in the Hunter Holmes McGuire – VAMC in Richmond, Va. Guidon Design is the Architect of Record. This 17,000 SF project adds important medical and surgical critical care capacity serving America's military veterans and their families.  The project, designed over existing hospital space, adds 16 ICU beds, including multiple levels of isolation, family and staff support and decentralized nursing team capability.   • The 40-bed ICU and 39-bed NICU at Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center, designed by CO Architects are uniquely defined by ubiquitous connectivity and innovative technologies, a high-performance, team-based care platform, expansive views, and an abundance of daylight and outdoor respite terraces accessing the calming, restorative San Diego natural environment.   • The new, 23-bed, private-room NICU at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore, Md., creates defined yet overlapping zones for caregivers and families centered on the patient.   • Designed by Kahler Slater, the new ICU at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital combines surgical and coronary intensive care supporting the only four-organ transplant program for veterans in the US.   • This evidence-based designed 20-bed, 16,000 SF ICU by RLF, transforms care at Winter Park Memorial Hospital in Florida.   • The NICU at East Tennessee Children's Hospital is comprised of 44 private rooms organized in neighborhoods around light courts and an exterior roof garden. Shepley Bulfinch in association with BarberMcMurry Architects designed the space to support the hospital's mission to provide patient- and family-centered care delivery and to recognize the role of the family in the continuum of care.   • Stantec designed new intensive care units at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La. for the most complex patients in the region.  The ICUs are designed with visualization capabilities both from the main nurse station and from the viewing station.   • The Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion in Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, Fla. houses the NICU, PICU, BMTU and CVICU. Architects from Perkins+Will organized the space into three zones: Family, Patient and Caregiver.
