Around the nation: San Francisco mayor backs tough antismoking ordinance

    • California: San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee (D) has endorsed a newly proposed measure, sponsored by city Supervisor Malia Cohen, that would ban the retail sale of menthol cigarettes and other flavored tobacco products. According to Cohen, the measure is designed to reduce smoking and tobacco use among minority groups and teenagers, who have been targeted in ad campaigns that promote such products (Korry, Kaiser Health News, 4/20).

    • Massachusetts/Rhode Island: Boston-based Partners HealthCare may acquire Providence-based Care New England. The two not-for-profit systems have signed a letter of intent, but a final deal may take months to negotiate and must pass muster with state and federal regulators, Modern Healthcare reports. The deal would include several of Care New England's facilities, but not Memorial Hospital—that facility would be sold to Prime Healthcare Foundation, a not-for-profit community hospital system based in Ontario, California (Modern Healthcare, 4/19).

    • New Mexico: Silver City-based Gila Regional Medical Center has named Taffy Arias as its next CEO. Previously, Arias was CEO of Martin General Hospital in North Carolina and CNO and interim CEO at Porter Health Care System in Indiana. She will officially assume her new role at the end of May (Haefner, Becker's Hospital Review, 4/19).
