Around the nation: NJ launches 'baby box' program

Daily Briefing
    • New Jersey: The state's Child Fatality and Near Fatality Review Board has partnered with California-based Baby Box to provide residents with supplies for newborns in an effort to reduce sudden infant death syndrome. The program offers so-called "baby boxes," which can be used as a bed during an infant's first two months and which contain supplies like diapers and baby wipes. The program also aims to educate parents about newborn care by requiring them to review an online curriculum and take a quiz before they can receive a box (Zimmerman, Becker's Hospital Review, 1/27).

    • New York: Ram Raju has been named senior VP and community health investment officer of Northwell Health. Raju previously served as CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals and, before that, CEO of Cook County Health & Hospitals System in Chicago. In his new role, Raju will work to develop programs and partner with local organizations to serve vulnerable communities in the area. "Northwell Health created a position that enables me to pursue my passionate interest in improving population health and addressing the social determinants of health," Raju said in a statement (Lagasse, Healthcare Finance, 1//27; Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 1/27; Whitman, Modern Healthcare, 1/27).

    • Utah: Intermountain Health on Jan. 25 broke ground on the Intermountain Kem Gardner Transformation Center. The facility will house various clinical programs, initiatives, and institutes that aim to transform the way care is delivered to achieve the highest quality of care at the lowest-possible cost. The new center, funded in part by a $20 million donation from Kem Gardner, a member of Intermountain's board, is scheduled to be completed in 2018 (Monegain, Healthcare IT News, 1/27).
