Healthcare IT News IDs 25 top hospital IT departments

Healthcare IT News has released its 2012 lists of the best IT departments at small, medium, and large U.S. hospitals.

This year, 272 U.S. hospitals were nominated for the three lists and 125 qualified for consideration. To qualify as a nominee, at least 50% of the facility's IT employees must take a survey from Healthcare IT News. The survey asked IT employees to rank the importance of their satisfaction with:

  • Day-to-day work;
  • Immediate work unit, team or IT department group;
  • Workplace culture;
  • Senior management and organizational leadership;
  • Training, professional development and advancement;
  • Direct supervisor or manager; and
  • Compensation, benefits and employee recognition.

IT departments that scored the highest in the categories most important to employees received the highest ranking. Healthcare IT News then identified the top IT departments at large hospitals, medium-sized hospitals, and small hospitals:

Large hospitals (more than 350 licensed beds):

    1. Intermountain Healthcare (Murray, Utah)
    2. Tenet Healthcare Corporation (Dallas)
    3. Sharp Healthcare (San Diego)
    4. Genesis Healthcare System (Zanesville, Ohio)
    5. Meridian Health (Neptune, N.J.)
    6. Heartland Health (St. Joseph, Mo.)
    7. TriStar Centennial Medical Center (Nashville)
    8. Cancer Treatment Centers of America (Schaumburg, Ill.)
    9.UC-Irvine Health (Orange, Calif.)
    10. Roper St. Francis Healthcare (Charleston, S.C.)

Medium hospitals (101 to 350 licensed beds):

    1. Thibodaux Regional Medical Center (Thibodaux, La.)
    2. Frankfort Regional Medical Center (Frankfort, Ky.)
    3. Springhill Medical Center (Mobile, Ala.)
    4. Highlands Regional Medical Center (Prestonburg, Ky.)
    5. Saint Francis Medical Center (Cape Girardeau, Mo.)
    6. Sarah Bush Lincoln Health System (Mattoon, Ill.)
    7. St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital (Shawnee, Okla.)
    8. Union Hospital (Elkton, Md.)
    9. Ephraim McDowell Health (Danville and Stanford, Ky.)
    10. Children's Hospital & Medical Center (Omaha, Neb.)

Small hospitals (100 or fewer licensed beds):

    1. Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital (Elkin, N.C.)
    2. Mount Desert Island Hospital (Bar Harbor, Maine)
    3. Nanticoke Memorial Hospital (Seaford, Del.)
    4. Lakewood Health System (Staples, Minn.)
    5. Fauquier Health (Warrenton, Va.)

According to Healthcare IT News, the best hospital IT departments received high scores for characteristics such as accountability, empowerment, honesty, openness, teamwork, trust, and work-life balance (Means, Healthcare IT News, 9/25; Moran, Healthcare IT News, 9/14).
