Hospital shooting prompts manhunt for surgeon

Police lock down campus for several hours

A nursing student at New York's Erie County Medical Center was shot and killed on Wednesday morning, and police have begun a manhunt for her ex-boyfriend, a trauma surgeon at the hospital.

A New York State Police SWAT team locked down the 65-acre hospital campus after the student, Jacqueline Wisniewski, was found dead in a covered passageway between two buildings, and ECMC briefly diverted ED patients to other hospitals. Wisniewski's ex-boyfriend, Timothy Jorden, had previously served as an Army Special Forces medic, and the two reportedly had a difficult relationship.

The head of corporate security at nearby Unity Hospital notes that as details come out about the shooting, other hospitals will pick apart the event and use it to inform their own safety protocols.

"That's a very tragic event and our hearts go out to the hospital and the staff and the families out there," he added (Leibowitz, CBS News, 6/13; Esposito et al., ABC News, 6/13; Fox News, 6/14; Clarke, YNN, 6/13).
