Centers should foster a creative, risk-tolerant environment by familiarizing staff with innovation processes, securing dedicated innovator time, and developing space separate from hospital walls.
  • Facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration: Innovation efforts often lack the coordination needed for effective execution, resulting in duplicative efforts and a lack of access to appropriate resources. To execute collaborative, multidisciplinary projects, successful centers are building multidisciplinary innovation teams and hardwiring collaboration in center processes.
  • Translate ideas to implementation: Transitions from project development to implementation often lead to a loss of project understanding and sense of ownership. To execute effective transitions, profiled institutions are thoughtfully structuring knowledge transfers for implementation and building in-house support for innovation efforts.
