Trouble in paradise: Hawaii physicians fight preauthorization attempt

Preauthorization has long been a part of outpatient imaging access. The promise of cost savings and improved appropriateness have made it an attractive approach for health insurers looking to manage imaging utilization.

But while preauthorization is an effective utilization management tool, it can sometimes limit access to care. Data from our access survey shows that 60% of providers are adding at least 48 hours to the time it takes patients to get scheduled in order to accommodate preauthorization.
