Around the nation: Nurse-midwife delivers 5,000th baby

Daily Briefing
Dianne Quadros, who has been a nurse-midwife for 30 years, says she's hoping to deliver at least 1,000 more babies, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, Louisiana, and Massachusetts.
    • District of Columbia: Washington, D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine (D) on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against Juul Labs claiming the company marketed its e-cigarette products to teenagers and misled customers about the addictive quality of its products. Racine in the lawsuit also said Juul failed to verify the ages of customers who ordered the products online. The lawsuit alleges the marketing practices violate local consumer protection laws. North Carolina, California, and New York have filed similar lawsuits (Nirappil, Washington Post, 11/26).
    • Louisiana: Louisiana's Department of Health last month ended Medicaid coverage for more than 46,000 beneficiaries after resuming a process in which the state automatically disenrolls beneficiaries who do not respond to annual renewal information requests. The department sent out 52,000 letters requesting beneficiaries' renewal information and gave beneficiaries until Oct. 31 to respond (Modern Healthcare, 11/26).
    • Massachusetts: Dianne Quadros, a nurse-midwife at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital in Massachusetts, delivered her 5,000th baby last month. Quadros, who has been a nurse-midwife for 30 years, keeps a detailed record of each birth. The 5,000th baby was Benjamin Moynihan, whose parents nicknamed him "Benny 5,000." At the time of her interview with CBS Boston, Quadros had delivered 5,011 babies. "I'm hoping to get another 1,000. I've got at least another 10-year plan" (Hughes, CBS Boston, 11/25; Bean, Becker's Clinical Leadership & Infection Control, 11/26).
