A year ago, Kurt Niederloh collapsed from a heart attack while running the Run for the Lakes 10K, but two other runners—an RN and a nurse practitioner—saved his life, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from California, Maine, and Minnesota.
- California: Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Monday announced Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas will head a new advisory task force to tackle homelessness in the state. Newsom also announced Tom Insel, the former director of the National Institute of Mental Health, will serve in a newly created role as California's advisor for developing strategies to address mental health issues (Sheridan, STAT News, 5/22).
- Maine: Maine on Monday became the 25th state to confirm a case of measles this year when a school-aged child in Somerset County was confirmed to have the disease. The United States is currently going through the worst measles outbreak in 25 years, with 880 people contracting the highly contagious disease so far this year (Reuters, 5/22; Goldschmidt/Scutti, CNN, 5/23).
- Minnesota: A year ago, Kurt Niederloh collapsed from a heart attack while running the Run for the Lakes 10K, but two other runners, Melissa Goble, a women's health nurse practitioner, and Kimberly Hartung, an RN, stopped and saved his life. Last month, Niederloh commemorated the nurses' lifesaving act by running the same 10K alongside Goble and Hartung. His wife, son, and two stepchildren ran the race with them (Dutch, Runner's World, 5/22).
