Around the nation: Winchester patients get a visit from therapy rabbits

Daily Briefing

Every Monday, the rabbits visit an average of 100 patients at Winchester Medical Center, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Florida, Massachusetts, and Virginia.

    • Florida: Florida-based Martin Health System signed a definitive agreement to become a full member of Cleveland Clinic. As part of the agreement, Cleveland Clinic will invest $500 million in funds over five years to support the three-hospital system's capital needs and services. The agreement is pending federal and state regulatory review (Coutré, Modern Healthcare, 10/2).
    • Massachusetts: Wellforce on Tuesday announced that CEO Norm Deschne will retire at the end of this year. Deschne has served as CEO of the health system since its inception in 2014. According to Ellen Zane, chair of Wellforce's board of trustees, Deschne formed Wellforce "to bring community and academic medicine together in a model that respected both equally" (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 10/2).
    • Virginia: Patients at Winchester Medical Center on Monday welcomed a visit from seven therapy rabbits through the hospital's Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) Services. Every Monday, the rabbits visit an average of 100 patients. The rabbits, which come from Miller's Spanish Oak Farm in Clarke County, visit the veterinarian every year to be tested for good temperament (Merod, Winchester Star, 10/30).
