Around the nation: Jennifer Lawrence to star as Theranos founder Holmes in new movie

    Vanessa Taylor, a screenwriter who co-wrote the Oscar-winning film "The Shape of Water," will write the screenplay, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from California, Florida, and Hawaii.

    • California: Vanessa Taylor, a screenwriter who co-wrote the Oscar-winning film "The Shape of Water," will write a screenplay for a film about the scandal surrounding blood-testing startup Theranos. The film will be titled "Bad Blood," based on the book "Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in Silicon Valley," which was released Monday, and will star Jennifer Lawrence as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. Adam McKay, director of films including "The Big Short" and "Anchorman," will direct the film (Bean, Becker's Hospital Review, 5/18).

    • Florida: Virginia Ingram, an Army nurse during World War II, celebrated her 100th birthday last month. Ingram spent the majority of World War II working in the Philippines at various American military installations and currently resides in an assisted-living home in Niceville (Thompson, Northwest Florida Daily News, 5/20).

    • Hawaii: Hawaiian health officials have distributed about 2,000 N95 masks to protect residents from the ash coming from the state's Kilauea volcano. Officials warned that the masks would not protect against gases and vapors, and according to the Associated Press, geologists are warning that the volcano could become more violent and produce more ash (Neuman, "The Two-Way," NPR, 5/18).
