A family spokesperson said former President George H. W. Bush is "responding to treatments and appears to be recovering," in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Alaska, California, and Texas.
- Alaska: Petersburg Medical Center has named Phil Hofstetter as CEO, effective this summer. Hofstetter is currently VP at Norton Sound Health Corp. in Nome and will succeed Liz Woodyard, who is retiring in June (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 4/20).
- California: The California Assembly on Thursday passed a bill that would make it illegal to sell or advertise gay conversion therapy in the state. The bill, which would classify the practice as a fraudulent business practice, would not ban people from talking about or selling books about gay conversion therapy (Gstalter, The Hill, 4/22).
- Texas: Former President George H.W. Bush was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on Sunday morning with a blood infection, just days after his wife, Barbara, died. According to Jim McGrath, a family spokesman, Bush, 93, is "responding to treatments and appears to be recovering" (Frosch, Wall Street Journal, 4/23; Taylor, NPR, 4/23; Herskovitz, Reuters, 4/23).
