The bride decided to hold the wedding at the hospital so her father, who is being treated for leukemia, could attend, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Alaska, California, and Massachusetts.
- Alaska: Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Denali Center has named Jim Lynch CEO, effective Dec. 15. He succeeds Greg Johnson, who is resigning to pursue a new opportunity. Lynch has worked as COO of the hospital since 2016 (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 11/20).
- California: Nurses and hospital staff at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center helped host a wedding at the hospital last week so that the bride's father, who is being treated for leukemia, could attend. The bride, Vieneese Stanton, said, "My dad didn't even know we were planning this." She added, "He takes walks around the hospital in the morning so they decided to take him for his walk and then I turned the corner on him." The wedding had been scheduled for April, but Stanton and her now-husband decided to move the date up after talking with Stanton's father's doctors about his prognosis (Adams, People, 11/20).
- Massachusetts: Gov. Charlie Baker (R) on Monday signed a bill that codifies into state law an Affordable Care Act rule mandating that insurers cover birth control without cost-sharing. As with the federal law, the state law requires insurers to cover at least one version of each FDA-approved contraceptive method. The move comes after President Trump issued an executive order that allows employers to opt out of the federal rule if they express religious or moral objections (AP/Sacramento Bee, 11/20).
