Around the nation: Aurora Health, Northwestern Mutual invest $10M in Milwaukee start-ups

Daily Briefing

Officials say the investments include a multiyear monetary commitment, business resources, and mentorship, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Florida, Maryland, and Wisconsin.

    • Florida: Broward Health has tapped Sandra Todd-Atkinson as CEO of Broward Health Medical Center and Alice Taylor as CEO of Broward Health North. Todd-Atkinson has served as COO of Broward Health Medical Center and Salah Foundation Children's Hospital as well as CNO and COO at Broward Health Imperial Point. Taylor comes to Broward Health North after serving as CEO at Broward Health Imperial Point and has previously worked as COO of Broward Health Medical Center (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 10/30).

    • Maryland: Five researchers from institutions throughout the country will lead the National Center for Data to Health. The center—created by a five-year, $25 million agreement from NIH's National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences—seeks to provide research infrastructure to academic institutions. The center will be led by researchers from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Oregon Health & Science University, the University of Washington, and Sage Bionetworks (Cohen, Becker's Health IT & CIO Review, 10/30).

    • Wisconsin: Aurora Health Care and Northwestern Mutual, both based in Milwaukee, are each investing $5 million to support start-ups in their city. The investments will be made through Northwestern Mutual's Cream City Venture Capital and Aurora's InvestMKE venture. The investments include a multiyear monetary commitment, business resources, and mentorship, according to officials (Gooch, Becker's Hospital CFO Report, 10/30).
