Around the nation: Washington gov. signs family leave bill into law

Daily Briefing
    • Indiana: Deaconess Health System has named a new CEO and a new president to replace president and CEO Linda White, who retired June 30. Shawn McCoy, who during his 26-year career at Deaconess has served as EVP and COO, will take over as CEO. James Porter, an adult and pediatric hospitalist who has been with Deaconess for 17 years, will serve as president. Porter previously served as Deaconess' EVP of physician enterprise and CMO (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 7/5).

    • New Jersey: With help from 15 local high school students, the Overlook Foundation has raised and awarded $40,000 to Overlook Medical Center. The funding will go to the hospital's NICU. For the project, students met regularly with the board to learn about how the hospital foundation works to raise money (Paavola, Becker's Hospital Review, 7/5).

    • Washington: Gov. Jay Inslee (D) on Wednesday signed a bill that will grant eligible workers 12 weeks of family leave. Beginning in 2020, employees who have worked for at least 820 hours can take the leave for the birth or adoption of a child, or for a serious medical condition affecting the worker or a family member. The paid leave system is funded by contributions from employers and employees. Other states with guaranteed family leave programs include California, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island (La Corte, AP/Sacramento Bee, 7/5).
