Digital breast tomosynthesis–the much-hyped and long-awaited technology set to revolutionize breast imaging–is finally available, having secured commercial approval from the FDA in February 2011. As potentially one of the most disruptive clinical technologies to emerge since 64-slice CT, this 3D imaging technique demonstrates significant clinical improvements over the now market standard 2D digital mammography, causing many experts to believe breast tomosynthesis will become the new standard for breast cancer screening and diagnosis, and can become a “game-changer” in an increasingly competitive market for breast imaging services.

However, some skepticism and myriad operational challenges exist for organizations pursuing an investment in tomosynthesis technology. This session provides hospital leaders and physicians with the “need to know” information regarding breast tomosynthesis, addressing the key technology, clinical, market, financial, and operational considerations associated with tomosynthesis adoption, and will provide Technology Insights’ and early adopters’ perspectives on the near- and long-term potential for the technology.
