A tenured major gift officer (MGO) is a rare asset. Over half of MGOs report being in their current role for two years or less—a “blink of an eye” in the often lengthy relationship-building process with major donors. Even those foundations fortunate to have long-term fundraisers find that they are being recruited with other offers.

Emerging accounts from the industry press indicate that the competition for seasoned fundraisers is likely to escalate as job markets loosen up. Recruitment and retention, especially of the MGO cohort, remains a critical imperative for development executives.
