In a landmark decision, sure to have enormous ramifications across the health care and biotechnology industries, the Supreme Court ruled today that naturally occurring genes cannot be patented—but synthetic genes can.
As a result, Myriad Genetics, who has patent claims on both the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, may lose its status as sole provider of BRCA genetic testing.
